The Painter

about

I'm a big fan of the Canadian painters, The Group of Seven. I also paint and I live in Algoma one of the regions that the Group came to to paint. Although the song is not directly about them, I try to honour them and the work they did and to all the painters who are still trying to capture the wild Algoma.

lyrics

There stands the painter
In a room all alone
The canvas stares back at him
The whiteness of the unknown
It’s taken all his money
It’s taken all his life
Except for the memory of his dear
Departed wife

Show me the land that you see
Show me the land by the great inland sea
Make the colours come alive
From the pallette to my eyes
Show me the land that you see
———
Yellow gold and red paint the forest bright
The painter wonders all alone
Chasing elusive light
Stopping by the falls
The white water roars
His brush dances in his hand
Until it dances no more

BRD

Catch the colours in the open air
The train whistle calls me there
Fresh water breeze, blowing in the trees
I’m coming back to you
———-
Shuffling through the days work
To find that masterpiece
Sketches of the land
That’s very seldom seen
Hanging in honoured halls
For scrutiny and critic
Will they know his feelings
That made his heart weak
